I took a picture for you (it's clickable), but I probably won't get back to this until the weekend. I get to SAL one of my Huge Projects with Feathers tomorrow and then I'll work on Annubis later in the week. But I'm pleased with this bit of progress. The first installment is to finish the house, and I'm almost there with two weeks to go before the next assignment. Then, I've been trying to think of a way to make my new blog a bit interesting in its newness...who wouldn't?...when this morning I came across a terrific little SAL on one of the French blogs I read. Now I know most of the people who read my blog don't read French, and probably rarely visit too many French blogs. So, I thought, that is really a cute idea, why don't I put it in my blog and have an English speaking SAL along the same lines. Ok, love it, let's go for it. Are you up to a "Totally Useless But Fun and Artsy SAL"? Well, let me explain the Totally Useless SAL before you say, "No".

- The Totally Useless SAL will begin January 26 the date of the next New Moon and end December 16th. New participants will be welcomed at any time throughout the year. If it is November and you are reading this for the first time, don't worry. There is no need to "catch up", if you feel the pull, join us.
- You are allowed to check the permanent Totally Useless Membership list to see how many of your friends are already stitching along with us.
- You have to register by posting a comment saying you want to participate on this post so that we can all go to your blog to view your Totally Useless SAL.
- Find a see-through container: i.e., mayonaise jar, fish bowl, jelly/jam jar, something you'll enjoy. Containers may be changed at your pleasure -- but not any previously posted contents.
- Every time you are stitching throughout the coming year you agree to put all your "stitching throw aways" in this container. This may include:
- regular Orts (thread ends)
- little snips of fabric
- broken buttons you were going to use on that little Lizzy Kate flip it
- a bead or two from your Mirabilia design
- worn out needles
- the labels from used up floss skeins
- whatever you like, as long as it is, or rather, was (LOL) going to be part of a stitching project currently underway.
- you may include orts from any type of stitching project: cross stitch, knitting, crochet, whatever, but please do not include other craft leftovers such as paper crafts, rubber stamping, etc.
- This must be a new collection not an ort container you have already been collecting.
- Each month, on the date of the New Moon, or very shortly thereafter, you will post progress pictures of your Totally Useless SAL on your blog. You may or may not describe a few of the interesting new items in your container. (If you do not have a blog you may send your pictures to me and I will post them for you.)
- Now as the organizer of this Totally Useless SAL I have to do all the real work...ha ha...
- I have to let you know at each New Moon the dates of the next New Moon -- what a huge job (te he). Or, you can check the Phases of the Moon photo at the top right of this blog to find the date of the new moon any time you're here.
- Well, I also have to maintain a list of participants and each month post it with a link to your blog, so maybe that "ha ha" was a little premature. (Edit: Click here to view the permanent Totally Useless Membership list.)
- I have to let you know at each New Moon the dates of the next New Moon -- what a huge job (te he). Or, you can check the Phases of the Moon photo at the top right of this blog to find the date of the new moon any time you're here.
- On December 16th our SAL will end with the beautiful projects we have created. You might even arrange a trade if you like somebody else's Totally Useless SAL better than your own. There will be one or more Totally Useless Prize awarded at the completion of the SAL, but I haven't quite pinned that down. If there are just a few participants everybody could get something. But if we get many participants it would have to be some kind of random drawing, I can't work out any criteria for that until I know how many participants there are. So sign up early, the prize is a surprise!
Okay, that's it, the Totally Useless SAL. What do you think? Would you like to participate with me? I think it will be a really fun activity myself; not very time consuming; didn't incur any 'additional' stitching for yourself; sort of useful because now when you find that odd bit of thread on the kitchen floor you'll know right where to put it; and will create a pretty little project.
My virtual friend Milly posted a picture of her "orts jar" a while back (first photo). And Milly collects not only orts but the labels off DMC skeins as well, that's the second container in her photo. The second photo shows an orts jar that has obviously been in the WIP stage for quite a while. And the third photo is the orts jar I started last night, boy do I have a ways to go to catch up with those other two! We'll do all the encouraging we can to keep you on track -- we certainly wouldn't want your Totally Useless SAL to land in the UFO bin, now would we.

Leave your comment on the this page only and tell all your stitchy friends to stop by and register for the Totally Useless SAL. Let's make it lots of fun!!
Please be sure there is an e-mail or blog link where I can contact you in your comment.
Don't forget to sign up for my first Pay it Forward on this blog by leaving a comment on the PIF page.

You've convinced me - it sounds like fun. As soon as it cools down enough (it's incredibly hot here right now) I'll go hunting for a suitable container. I think it'll have to be a large one - I seem to generate masses of left-overs when I stitch.
Found your blog and love this idea! I would love to join in...will be interesting how much "waste" I do generate each year.
Hi! Make a stop here for catching this funny idea - it sounds very good! i'm with you, create a link for this page in my blog!
Hey I would like to join in, do some stitching but primarily have been on a crochet kick, I do alot of scrapbooking so can I use ribbon and fiber snippets from my scrapbooking and crochet projects? If so would love to join in on the fun.......
Okay, You got me! :-)
I will start my SAL and we will see if I can find a jar big enough to last through next Dec. I might have to get a big plastic bag and add to it through the year and put it in a jar next Dec.
Like I need to save any more stuff in my tiny apartment! :-) Only for you, girl.
Hugs,
Doreen Lynn
I'm a couple days late, but can I still join in?
thanks! what a fun idea.
Ok, I'm in all I have to do is find a container big enough...this could be a lot of fun and will stop me from dropping bits and pieces on the floor that I have to pick up at the end of the day...still hot here in the land of Oz....xoxo
Hi, I read about your SAL on Karen`s Blog (Karen`s Handiwork)so I came here to find out more about it. I think it is a great idea and would love to join you all.
Alright, already! My orts are piling up. Please let me join the SAL.
This sounds like a great idea! Count me in - though I have a month's worth of bits to catch up on!
Ta!
I like this idea a lot. I may just add in bits of yarn from my knitting too. Now to find a nice jar to use...
lol, okay, you got me too. I even have a jar I can use that has been just waiting for the right thing.
Okay so I am in. I found a temporary container for now until I can get a better one. I am a month late so I have lots to make up for. :)
My Totally Useless SAL Pic for the Feb New Moon is posted on my blog.
This is a fun no pressure SAL!!
milliehubbard.blogspot.com
Sounds like a fun idea - count me in too - I just have to round up all my orts that have grown in the past week and find a suitable container...then a pic on my blog - right?
right-o - off we go!
What a fabulous idea! Can I join too? Maybe I'll have to start some Christmas stitching and use some metallics so that it'll look real pretty. Gosh, I'll have to arrange a portable container for when I stitch away from home, so I can add that too, rather than throwing them away. Oh, I'd better start up A Stitching Frenzy Thanks!!
Okay YoYo...count me in on this one. :) I think this will be cute!
Could I join please!!

This sounds SO much fun! I want in! :D
I will go jar hunting this weekend.
Hi, would love to joins the SAL, sounds good fun. I've posted my first entry on my blog.
Count me in as well. I love this idea!
Count me in too. Off to find a jar as soon as I leave work.
Count me in please. I have a small glass ornament fill with orts. I was given to me just this last Christmas by a stitching friend. I hope to save mine and to the same next Christmas.
Warm Hugs
Shay
I just discovered your blog today and I would love to join this SAL. I have a perfect jar I would like to use and know that I will fill the jar in no time at all.
I have finally figured out what this is all about. I kept seeing jars of orts and I was a little slow to catch on. I love collecting my orts over the years but this year decided to only collect each month and then toss them. So I have decided to join you girls. I have some catching up to do.
I have decided to join too :) YOU can find me at http://charscraftydays.blogspot.com/ Off to look for a suitable container and hunt on the floor and down the side of the couch for all the bits I frogged last night!!
I would love to join!! Please sign me up, I already have a jar picked out! My orts usually just end up all over the coffee table or between the couch cushions.
Just like stitchingfriend said "I have finally figured out what this is all about. I kept seeing jars of orts and I was a little slow to catch on. I love collecting my orts over the years but this year decided to only collect each month and then toss them. So I have decided to join you girls. I have some catching up to do."
I just found out about cute glass jars of this stuff I have been seeing on stitcher's blogs...
Can I join, please? After seeing the cute jars I started my own, before I knew it was a SAL.
I need to go take a pic... thanks Eliza
Well after seeing people's updates of theirs in the last several days, I have to do it now! So I am in!!! Please as me to the list!!!
I'm glad I found your SAL. My first orts jar is nearly full so it's time to start a new one. Please count me in. Thanks!
If it's not too late, I would like to join in. I buy those clear plastic christmas balls and stuff my orts in them every year. My kids think they look crazy on the tree but I think they're kind of cool.
Ok, I can't hold out any longer. I want in on the fun too! Can you add me? I need to go out and find a nice jar with a lid to store my orts. I am hoping that at the end of the year, I'll have a colorful orts jar like everyone else!
What a fun idea! I've just had mine all wadded up in the bottom of my stitchery bag! I'll definetly start putting those things in a jar! Come check out my progress!
Please, Please, Can I still join???? Just a wee bit late, But no fear I can catch up...really....I'm out of town, but I will post on my blog when I return in a week.....:)
Oh... I would love to join, please? And... well... I can catch up - I promise! I sew a lot! Just saw this on Craft Gossip... right now this week's ort thread bits are mostly in the sewing room carpet, but I can fix that!
I'd love to join in please! I read about this a couple of months ago and I've been saving my orts until I found a good container for them, which I now have! I'll post a pic in my blog this weekend.
This sounds like a lot of fun. I just need to find an appropriate jar. I bet I have more than I think over the course of a year.
Do you have a button? I would put it on my blog.
In the past I have saved my scraps for the birds to use in nesting-makes the nests prettier =0)-so this should be fun. I am putting a jar by my sewing machine, one by my serger and one where I do my hand work.
I am a huge fan of the totally useless! I'm in! I'm also leaving on Tuesday for a three month vacation, so I won't be creating my jar til mid-July... but having committed to a totally handmade Christmas, I think I should be able to catch up! Great fun! Thanks!
By golly, I think I'll join in too! Thanks for a fun and "totally useless" idea.
Ooohh, I do not have to throw away these nice colored snippings, and all the other small things I will not use anymore, but were so dear. I will search for a jar and start collecting. Or maybe a few smaller jars for different colors.
Count me in, I start today!
Anne (from Almere, the Netherlands)
Please include my name in this SAL. I can't wait to see how much I accumulate. Thanks for having this SAL. I promise to post a picture on the new moon phase each month.
Can I include the trimmings from my crochet projects too? I think I need to participate in this.
Ah! I worked this time like a charm! It must have been your magic touch!
This SAL sounds like a lot of fun, and one that is completely do-able for me! And stress free, too! lol
Thanks so much for letting me join!
Oooh I'd love to join. A great idea that has no pressure AND is 'totally useless'? Count me in!! :)
Looks like great fun. Can I join in now?

Hi, I started it too. You can find my jar on http://hoebeltje.blogspot.com/
Oh, I am SO in on this. I may not get around to posting a pic on my blog until tomorrow, but I'm terribly excited about joining this growing group of ort and stitchy "trash" collectors. Please add me to your list!
I'd like to join too!
Somehow I cannot resist being part of a "Totally Useless" SAL! Please add me to your list!
It'll be a day or two before I post my jar picture. Also, I definitely want to get that button up top but my 57 YO eyes don't let me read print that small- or maybe it's just that I am up WAY too late.
Such a fun idea- thanks!
I want to join. Here is my post about this SAL.
http://beasblabber.blogspot.com/2009/04/tuesday-tidbits-tusal-is-not-misspelled.html

Finally, a SAL that I can keep up with! I'd like to join, too.
I think that this is something that I can do. Sign me up please!
Another late-starter here....I want to play! I already know what jar I want to use, too -- an adorable jar that once held mandarin oranges, and I bought it just because it was so neat. I KNEW there was another reason! LOL

Please add me to the list too - I am new to cross stitch and need all the motivation I can get (and if it is a SAL so much the better!)
www.allthedaysof.blogspot.com
Add me to your list. I can use some motivation to get back to cross stitch although I have plenty of other scraps from other kinds of ebroidery, quilting, and knitting!
Please add me to the list I wish I had know about this earlier in the year, it sounds like great fun. What a creative piece as no two jars will be alike.
Hi,
What a great idea! LOL!
Add me in as this sounds like fun since I already collect my Orts. I'll start with what I'm stitching on now in a "fresh" container as I know my regular Orts container goes back over a year. LOL!!!

What a great idea! My neighbour and fellow stitcher told me about this SAL and I'dlovetojoin.
I am Clare (blog name Aimetu) and I stitch mainly cross stitch, hardanger and some machine sewing.
I do not have a jar yet but will be saving my threads and will hopefully have a jar by the end of May.
I have two blogs -

Leigh ~
I have been interested in your Totally Useless SAL and would like to join and do one. I have another thread jar and tag jar already started the first of the year.
Now I can start my Sal jar. I think they are so much fun and it lets you know you have made progress though out the year.
My son makes fun of the fact that I have two jars already. I can hardly wait to see his face when he discovers I have a third one that is a totally useless jar of junk.
I don't have a blog yet but I will give you my email addy - reddrooster@gmial.com. I hope to have my blog up and running by the next new moon phase the 24th.
Thanks for thinking of this fun project it will be a blast!
I am making a blog list and yours is one I have visited before and will continue.
God Bless ~
Lenna
Hi! This sounds like a fun project and I'd love to join. I don't have a current blog, so I'd have to send you pictures of the work in progress. My DH and I will be returning from vacation on May 24th so it will be very late on the 24th or perhaps the 25th before I can get the first picture to you. Would this be ok? My email address is wherescarol [at] gmail [dot] com.
Thanks!

Oh yes, count me in too! Forget where I found this, but it was through reading someone's blog! Going to be fun to see progress pics!

OK i have seen this on loads of blogs and thought it was a funny SAL but didnt think i would have much to put in it, but after hubby keeps complaining about the amount of thread that gets everywhere i think it may be a good idea to see if i can sign up lol
Oh, what the heck. I'll join, too!
I want to participate. Just found your blog today and just started doing a new needlepoint project (after 10 years away) yesterday. I also knit a lot, since you can do that in the dark, so I'm off to find a jar.
My blog has never yet seen a needlepointing post, so I will have to start blogging about it too. Need to get organized, yup yup!!
Change my profile to my Blogger account, duh.

Hi ~ I am interested in joining this SAL again. I have already posted once. I even started saving my stuff in the jar that day. What day you say? I don't remember.
I found it ~ it's May 13th. I have a blog now. It is theflyingitchesneedle.blogspot.com come by and see me. I worked very hard on it. I would also like to put up the cute little blinkies but don't know how. Help?

I just found out about this SAL yesterday. I would like to join in. :o) Last night I dug out a canning jar and started my collection. I'm not sure if I post about it on my blog today or wait till next month on the posting date. I might post tonight just to get it officially started.
Thanks, Elaine
Ok, me again. I'm trying to figure out how everyone got their comment to post with the Blogger icon?? I have a blogspot blog but I'm not sure which to choose from the dropdown menu. Just in case it doesn't work again, my blog is http://shutterbuglady.blogspot.com/
I've been an ORT collected for many years and now have several boxes! some are just threads, others are fabric snippets. They get used when I want to create a new fabric using dissolvable fabric and machine embroidery. Please can I join in? my blog is http://sheilasembroidery.blogspot.com/ there may even be a few pictures of my created fabrics there not sure where. They were also useful when making my Julia Caprara crazy patchwork.
Hi, I want to join the totally useless SAL too, if only for it's name...
The first of July seems a great date to start another resolution, so that will be the date I'm planning to start.
I'm from the Netherlands, and I'm into cross stitch for many many years now. Most of the time I stitch sitting on the couch, and I have a little pot to put my leftovers in. But I'll replace that for a nice jar.
Happy to join you all, it's a great and fun idea!!
As English is a foreign language for me, forgive me the writing and spellingmistakes I'm sure I make. The first months of this year I wrote my entries in English too, but due to business I stopped for a while. But now I'll add the English version again.
Love to hear from you.

Hi Yoyo,
Could I join in this amazing SAL? I am a great procrastinator but I would also like to be part of this fun SAL. I already have a little glass box and put my first orts in there. I usually do not have many snippets but I frogged some stitching on MW sampler and collected the orts.
Thank you for organizing this TUSAL.

Yoyo,
I would love to participate and posted my first update on June's new moon.

Funny, I have done this for years and for every project I have worked on. I simply fill the container with the snippets, worn needles and a tiny note encolose. If the piece is a gift I will pass it on to the recipient to hang on their Christmas tree if they choose. Funny what you can do with some scraps of ribbon or as I choose to twist a few of the remaining threads and use as a hanger.
Yoyo - I would love to join. How fun!!

This sounds like a fun SAL and one that I may be able to keep up with. LOL Only, drat, I just threw out my ort collection the other night. Oh well, time to start again.

what exactly does SAL stand for???
I'd love to participate! I know it's late in the year, but hope you will continue next year, too. Thanks!
Don't know why I'm just getting around to joining something I'm obvious good at...being useless, I mean. And considering the amount of stitching I still have left to do for Christmas I should probably get a gallon jar!
I look forward to getting to know all of you.
